Before the trip I looked at lots of insurers but half of them
wouldn't cover me since riding a bicycle is considered a 'highly
dangerous' activity. (I was electrocuted on the bike once so maybe
they have a point!) In the end I went with World Nomads, an Australian company who
specialise in covering adventurers who like an action-packed
holiday. Initially I only bought 3 months cover but as the Indiana
June story took off, I was able to extend it online without paying
extra fees.
Normally I'd rather poke myself in the eye rather than lodging
a drawn-out insurance claim so the real test came when I had to
claim for my iphone.
I was in Ecuador, logging in from random internet cafes but I
found I was able to do the whole claim online. They opened a cool
little claim file for me that I could log into at any time and see
the entire thread of conversation. I think it took about 7 weeks
from putting in the claim until the payment went into my account
and they paid out the full $800, so I was able to upgrade from an
iphone 3 to an iphone 4.
Insurance aside their website is a travel treasure-trove. You can
tap into the knowledge of more than 11,000 travellers from 129
countries to help plan your next trip. You can ask a nomad directly
for help or advice and there is a community of travellers who write
articles about what you need to know, before you go. So in short,
they make the whole boring and complicated world of insurance fun
and easy.
I've referred a few of my friends to them so to say thank you they

After 8 months of cycling I'm pretty low on funds so this is a good
